Early Game Zerg Scouting Strategies

Mastering Zerg scouting is extraordinarily important to being able to win in Starcraft 2. A great player will change their build and other strategies based on what their enemy is doing. If you really want to become a Diamond League player, you will need to develop and sooner or later master scouting. For example, with advanced scouting, you will see the rush attack way before the enemy is at your gate and it is certain you are going to lose. You'll have the foresight to defend your base and counterattack in a well planned way.
Scouting is especially essential for players of the Zerg race due to the fact that their soldiers are so extremely specialized. A winning overall method is to continually harass your opponent while you also scout him. This technique permits you to identify the enemy forces while slowing them down, and also lets you figure out which units you need to spawn so you can counter-attack him. Mutalisks should be used in connection with Zerglings as a method of adequately annoying your enemy while you scout him out.
If you can begin with your Zerg scouting strategies early on in the war, you will uncover whether your enemy plans on rush attacking you. For instance, if you find out during your spying that your Terran opponent has a Refinery completed prior to finishing their Barracks, you are most likely going to be rush attacked by Reapers. If you are fighting Protoss and they've constructed 2 Gateways before their Cyber Core is done, and you find no gas, then you must anticipate a Zealot cheese attack.
While scouting is crucial, it is only one part of a winning Zerg strategy. Other aspects include setting up decoys, burrowing, and knowing when to use focus fire and when not to. Usually, your Overlord can carry out the early spying to make sure you are not being rushed, so you don't need to use your drones as scouts. In 4 player maps with close air positions, it is a good strategy to send a Drone scout if your Overlord can't see the opposing base.
A guaranteed tactic that can be used vs. every species in the battle is to deploy in one or two Drones to your opponent's base to investigate early on in the battle. The second your Drones in danger being destroyed, produce an extractor inside the enemy base. Each and every time the enemy is about to crush it, cancel it out and just create a new one. This strategy can really tie up your foe's gas income and impede his technology advancement. Be sure to cancel your extractors early enough though - if you don't you will lose both the Extractor and the Drone (75 total minerals).
