On Tuesday Steve Carell announced that he would be leaving the T.V. Sitcom “The Office” after next year’s season. Carell will be finishing seven years on the show, receiving a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Comedy, three Emmy nominations and producing a million awkwardly funny moments that made him famous. Saying that he wants to finish his contract, spend time with his family, and focus on doing movies, Carell said that he thinks that the show can definitely go on without him.
Although “The Office” will probably suffer initially with the loss of character, Michael Scott, viewers and fans always get overly nervous when a character leaves a show. We “Office” fans have to remember that we still have one season left of Carell, and also that people leave sitcoms all the time. Many of these shows survive and some blunder but “The Office” is hilariously funny, and characters like Jim, Dwight, and Pam will have to keep viewers entertained.
Many people think that this character’s departure is a death sentence for the show, but Carell is being upfront and a man of his word, finishing his contract and moving on to bigger and better things. After all, I can image that he is sick of seven years of playing the same character, and wants to broaden his horizons. This may seem like the end of the world for some people, but who knows what could happen in a year. Carell could be offered more money and a better contract, or the show could take an interesting twist and be changed for the better. For now, fans should brace themselves for one more year of Michael Scott and hopefully many more years of “Office” time.
Let us know your opinion of this news. Is “The Office” doomed for eternity with the departure of Carell, or do you think that the show can survive and thrive?
